November is our Kindness Month! We talked about how to be kind to others, and show our appreciation to teachers. There are no boundaries for kindness, as Desmond Doss showed us last week in the Veteran’s Day video we watched!

I am also proud to announce that, for the FIRST TIME, our middle school basketball
team WON against the Stratford sixth graders this Tuesday! Our students played hard and played well. Go Phoenix!

Greetings everyone!

This week our students heard from the well-respected Korean War Veteran Judge Quentin Kopp who talked about the history of Veteran’s day. Afterwards, we watched a cartoon about Desmond Doss, a winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery during World War II. Doss’ love for our country and for his fellow soldiers was unquestioned and propelled him to complete great feats in midst of battle. We thank them all for their service.

We had a lovely time last Friday during my afternoon tea with parents and Peter Zhang, our college counselor. Peter’s extensive college counseling experience is impressive and his stories were inspirational. We are here to help our students to reach their dreams. Sky’s our limit! Go Phoenix!

We also reflected on how we have practiced the study skills we have learned about at the beginning of the quarter. I am confident that our students will have an even more fruitful Quarter 2. Student survey suggested that the activity they enjoyed the most in the HSArts spirit week is designing and painting the school murals! They also enjoyed the field day activities in the park and the ice cream social at the end of the spirit week. Now it is time to focus on finishing our Q1 strong. Go Phoenix!

The HSArts Taiwan High School Exchange program is beginning to take shape! We have three main program goals: education, cultural enrichment, and artistic advancement. More details about this exciting trip for our high schoolers and our fundraising efforts will be available soon.

It’s the fifth week of school and students are progressing nicely. I am thrilled to see many of our students forming good relationships with their peers and teachers. Students are taking some of their first tests in their classes. While sometimes daunting, exams are necessary checkpoints to measure learning and growth.

To support our students’ development of study skills, Ms. Leddy, queen of test prep, headlined our Monday student assembly and leadership class with a test-taking workshop. She also has an extensive background in SAT test preparation and attained perfect scores on two of her three SAT exams. This workshop taught our students the value of hard work and that no one is a natural born test taker. Diligence in study, taking and reviewing good notes, and asking questions are necessary to achieve high scores. Parents, please remind your student to complete and turn in Ms. Leddy’s workshop homework. This assignment reinforces the workshop message that working hard is a vital key to achieving success.

We hope to inspire our students to hone their passion for academics and keep on challenging themselves! I look forward to seeing the hard work from our students in their studies and in their testing.
