Musical Theatre Fall Showcase recap

October 20, 2022

Last Friday, we welcomed family and friends to our Musical Theatre Fall Showcase. After several lovely songs by individual singers and the group vocal class, our students performed the show play, The Con by Tracy Wells. Many of the students are first time performers who’ve never performed on stage, under bright lights, in front of an audience, and every student performed very admirably! Here are a few photos taken from the event for us to enjoy:

Congratulations to all of the performers! A special thanks to Ms. Hannah and Ms. Julia for rehearsing and helping our students prepare for the showcase! Looking forward to the Winter performance!

Featured Arts News of the Week

Mr. Brian Nieh, Dance Teacher

There’s still a bit of time before our Winter Wonders showcase at Herbst Theatre on December 16. However, our performers have been hard at work to prepare their dances, both in our full-time and Young Artists after school programs. Ms. Hanna already introduced the Flowery Hat dance, which some of our families got to see our students perform at the Cole Valley Fair last month.

As for the boys, they’ve been hard at work learning and practicing the Tibetan dance, Snow-Capped Celebrations in their Chinese ethnic dance class. Originating from the ancient Tibetans’ entertainment of singing and dancing around bonfires, this folk dance style features energetic and festive movements in celebration. In this piece, the short sleeves represent the khata, a traditional ceremonial scarf in Tibetan Buddhism. Being so high up in elevation and close to the skies, dancers use their khatas to express their praise to the heavens.

These dances, along with many others, will be ready with full costumes, props, and backdrops for you to enjoy come December. See you then!

Featured Arts Project of the Week – School Mural

October 13, 2022
Ms. Lucy Cui, Visual Arts Teacher

From beginning to now, the students worked together to help create a beautiful school mural. Students led the design themselves with pattern and color, and then put them on the wall! We divided the wall into several sections, dedicating 3 areas for a spring theme and other 3 for autumn, which represent the 2 seasons of San Francisco! Students used their creativity and imagination to colored the white wall with nature and imaginations. Although it’s only been a week and still work in progress, the artwork already looks promising.

Ms. Dana Crigler, Ballet Teacher

HSArts middle and high school students are not only trained in classical ballet techniques (Vaganova and Chaccetti), but also learn about musicality, artistry, dance history, and are exposed to different genres of dance (Contemporary, Jazz, etc.).  All students have the opportunity to perform classical ballet works from different ballets along with original works choreographed by teachers. For students that have identified they would like to dance in college or perform with professional companies, dance teachers also provide career planning and development to assist students in their goals.

Featured Arts Class of the Week: Musical Theatre

September 29, 2022
By Ms. Hannah Ogden, Acting Teacher and Musical Theatre Program Coordinator

In Musical Theatre Acting classes, we are well on our way through rehearsals for our fall play, The Con, by Tracy Wells. Our program has doubled since last year to include six full time Musical Theatre students and six elective students, all of whom are working hard on this semester’s busy performance schedule. Students are growing their on-stage skills, script analysis, and technical theatre knowledge. For many, this year is their first in a musical theatre program so we are building on the foundations of a strong actor. These include volume and projection, enunciation, reaction to what is happening on stage, and character development. When I was a theatre student, I learned that an actor must demonstrate confidence, creativity, and discipline. These three tenants have followed me into my professional teaching career, and I strive to ensure that my students excel in each of these areas.  Each production showcases a year’s worth of growth, and I am so excited and proud to help students reach their goals in this first quarter!

Featured Arts Class of the Week: Chiaroscuro

September 22, 2022
By Ms. Millie Hankinson

Our high school class began the year focusing on some of the foundations of drawing: shape, form, and proportion. After practicing these fundamental principles for several weeks, we worked on longer, more complex projects incorporating value and perspective to refine and advance our basic skill level. Now, with autumn at our doorstep, we turn our efforts toward quick sketching to prepare for our first portrait drawing session on Tuesday! Our model will be festively dressed as a fortune teller to celebrate the beginning of the Halloween season.

About Ms. Millie

Ms. Hankinson is a figurative artist and instructor. She studied fine art and illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and has been teaching throughout the Bay Area since 2013. After a guest lecture last school year, she joins our Visual Arts department as a full-time teaching starting this year.

“I studied Millie’s works when I was in high school, and I’m happy to have the chance to connect and work with Millie. Our visual arts program is in very good hands!”
– Mr. Kailin Qu, visual arts teacher
