The school year is truly flying by! Quarter Three already?! It feels like just yesterday that our Musical Theatre program was starting its first quarter ever in the fall of 2021, and now here we are, preparing to present the Spring Music and Musical Theatre Showcase over a year and a half later!  The musical theatre full-time and elective students have been working hard in the Acting classes to prepare a heartwarming production of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. This play is a compilation of short stories by Robert Fulgum, placed together to create a snapshot of the human experience. What happened to the confidence, creativity, and wonder of childhood? Why do we as humans sometimes lose our free-spirited nature as we age? This play seeks to explore what it means to be a person and asks the question “What is a legacy? What do I want my legacy to be when I leave this life?” Please join us on Wednesday, March 15th at 6 PM in Studio 2 for a night of vocal performances (featuring several solos and a group performance of Firework), musical selections from our instrumentalists, and a showing of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Tickets are free, though there will be a goodwill offering basket at the door for anyone who is interested in donating to the Musical Theatre program. All funds raised will go towards our final performance of the 2022-23 school year, which will be announced very soon 🙂 Please RSVP using this link so that we have an accurate estimate of our audience and can prepare accordingly. We hope to see you all on March 15th!

Happy New Year, everyone! We are so proud of all of the hard work that our Musical Theatre students accomplished in the first semester of this school year and we’re so excited to be jumping right in with a busy second semester. In Scene Study, students are reading The Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables, or Guys and Dolls Jr. with a focus on how music can help to build a complete story. In Production Rehearsals, we began the semester with a Playwriting Unit, allowing students to try out creating their own characters and writing scenes and monologues using their own ideas! We have now transitioned into full rehearsals, with students having just received the cast list for our third quarter show, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. This production is a compilation of stories from author Robert Fulghum, focussing on what it means to grow up and how we can all remember the joy of being a fearless child. My goal for this year’s production season is for students to have the opportunity to participate in multiple genres of theatre so that they are able to really focus on gaining the skills necessary to be well-rounded actors. We have tackled a comedy and a drama so far, and this show is truly a mix of both, allowing the students to apply what they learned in the first semester of classes. I am excited to invite you to our third quarter performance on Thursday, March 9th at 6 PM right here at HSArts in Studio 2. We hope to see many of you there!

Musical Theatre Fall Showcase recap

October 20, 2022

Last Friday, we welcomed family and friends to our Musical Theatre Fall Showcase. After several lovely songs by individual singers and the group vocal class, our students performed the show play, The Con by Tracy Wells. Many of the students are first time performers who’ve never performed on stage, under bright lights, in front of an audience, and every student performed very admirably! Here are a few photos taken from the event for us to enjoy:

Congratulations to all of the performers! A special thanks to Ms. Hannah and Ms. Julia for rehearsing and helping our students prepare for the showcase! Looking forward to the Winter performance!

Featured Arts Class of the Week: Musical Theatre

September 29, 2022
By Ms. Hannah Ogden, Acting Teacher and Musical Theatre Program Coordinator

In Musical Theatre Acting classes, we are well on our way through rehearsals for our fall play, The Con, by Tracy Wells. Our program has doubled since last year to include six full time Musical Theatre students and six elective students, all of whom are working hard on this semester’s busy performance schedule. Students are growing their on-stage skills, script analysis, and technical theatre knowledge. For many, this year is their first in a musical theatre program so we are building on the foundations of a strong actor. These include volume and projection, enunciation, reaction to what is happening on stage, and character development. When I was a theatre student, I learned that an actor must demonstrate confidence, creativity, and discipline. These three tenants have followed me into my professional teaching career, and I strive to ensure that my students excel in each of these areas.  Each production showcases a year’s worth of growth, and I am so excited and proud to help students reach their goals in this first quarter!
