Academic Class Spotlight: British Literature

by Mr. David Gallagher, English Teacher

In British Literature class so far this year, we have read two works, Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales.

Beowulf is cited as one of the most important works of Old English literature and is a great way to introduce students to epic poetry. Beowulf is estimated to have been written between 975 and 1025 CE. In class we discussed the definition of a hero or good leader versus that of a monster and related these qualities to contemporary heroes, leader. Even though the culture in Beowulf seems far removed from modern times, the poem explores universal themes that are still relevant today.

Next, we began our study of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales which perfectly captures a particular time period. When Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales, society was no longer divided into lords and peasants; professions were coming into existence and suddenly skilled craftsmen were making enough money to afford a pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral to visit the shrine of Thomas Becket. As I write this, the class is currently reading “The General Prologue” when Chaucer introduces his twenty-nine pilgrims, describing their ranks in society and also making fun of them in the process. They enjoy reading the descriptions of the medieval professions and Chaucer’s opinions of them.

I enjoy teaching this piece of Medieval Literature because Chaucer understood that who is telling the story matters. In the same way, the stories we choose to tell and how we tell them tells something about us. As a side assignment to reading The Canterbury Tales, I set aside a day in class for my students to think of a place that many different types of people gather such as a supermarket or an airport and to think about, list, and describe the many different types of people who visit that place. Some of my students are very keen observers of human behavior.

Back-to-School Night!

Things haven’t slowed down on campus all summer and we are pleased to have everyone back on campus! While our summer programs were in full swing, HSArts teachers and staff were in and out of the building planning for our new school year.

School started just a few weeks ago with a fun, all-school camping trip to build community spirit. Our all-important Orientation Day brought our students, new and returning, back onto campus. Our Back to School Night was well attended by parents and guardians as our teachers shared their new plans for this upcoming school year. We are especially excited to welcome our new staff members to our building.

Some exciting changes this year include adding to our school a new fifth-grade class and our dual enrollment program with Academy of Arts University for our Visual Arts students.

Greetings everyone!

Bring Joy and Happiness to All People
People have asked what our students do to help the community. Each student completes dozens of hours of community service each year. Some of those hours include performances and art exhibitions. That’s something unique our students contribute to the community, combining our duty to give back and our desire to share our arts with those around us. It touches the hearts of children and adults, especially our seniors. Audiences are often moved to tears. We need more of that during these challenging times, and I’m proud of every single one of our students! Go Phoenix!

Jan 13 – Remarks from our Head of School

Welcome back everyone!

Crazy weather we’re having, am I right? I’m happy to say that despite mother nature’s recent tantrums, our school has remained open for our families who braved the storm to attend classes as normal. But for all those who feel it is not safe, please stay safe and remain at home and our teachers will find ways to accommodate and get you the work to keep up.

All in all, we’re just so happy to see everyone back at school, in classes, in uniforms, engaging in the art that they love. Let’s stay passionate and work hard to achieve even greater successes this coming semester! Go Phoenix!

Dec 9 – Remarks from our Head of School

End of semester is a busy time for all of our students. They are working hard on their final projects, preparing for the final exams, putting the last touches on their artwork to get them ready for the exhibit, and our performing art students are rehearsing their performances. We are counting down the days to our final shows. It will be a great showcase of our students’ hard work and dedication. I look forward to our shows next Thursday at school and Friday 12/16 at the Herbst Theater. Go Phoenix!

Dec 2 – Remarks from our Head of School

Greetings everyone!

November is our kindness month. We learned how to be kind to others, show gratitude and appreciation to our teachers and staff. We also need to be kind to ourselves. We did mindfulness journaling at Golden Gate Park this past Monday. It is important to practice mindfulness during our last stretch of the semester when we have pressure from our exhibit and performances, as well as finals.

Nov 18 – Remarks from our Head of School

Greetings everyone!

November is our Kindness Month! We talked about how to be kind to others, and show our appreciation to teachers. There are no boundaries for kindness, as Desmond Doss showed us last week in the Veteran’s Day video we watched!

I am also proud to announce that, for the FIRST TIME, our middle school basketball
team WON against the Stratford sixth graders this Tuesday! Our students played hard and played well. Go Phoenix!

Nov 11 – Remarks from our Head of School

Greetings everyone!

This week our students heard from the well-respected Korean War Veteran Judge Quentin Kopp who talked about the history of Veteran’s day. Afterwards, we watched a cartoon about Desmond Doss, a winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery during World War II. Doss’ love for our country and for his fellow soldiers was unquestioned and propelled him to complete great feats in midst of battle. We thank them all for their service.
