Global Learning in Action: HSArts Taiwan Trip 2025

HSArts Taiwan Trip

This spring, high school students from 旧金山艺术高中(HSArts) traveled to Taiwan for an unforgettable 15-day educational and cultural exchange. The 2025 Taiwan Trip offered students a rare opportunity to experience global learning in action—deepening their understanding of Taiwanese culture, building meaningful friendships, and expanding their worldviews through immersive, hands-on experiences.

A Deep Dive into Indigenous Culture with the Bunun Tribe

A standout highlight of the trip was a two-day, one-night visit with the Bunun tribe (布農族), located in the lush mountains of southern Taiwan. Students were greeted with traditional songs by tribal elders and invited on a tour of the village, where they explored ancient stone dwellings and heard the stories behind historic landmarks like a massive boulder dislodged during a past earthquake.

In the evening, students gathered around a glowing campfire for a grand tribal feast—featuring more than ten traditional dishes such as roasted whole chicken, native vegetables like Zizania latifolia (茭白), and savory soups. The Bunun youth showcased their culture through dance and invited our students to join in the celebration, creating an atmosphere of joy and cross-cultural connection.

The next day included a friendly archery competition, hands-on coffee jelly making, and a delicious farewell barbecue. The warmth and generosity of the Bunun community left a lasting impact on our students.

Exploring Taiwanese Student Life and Arts Education

HSArts students also visited several local schools, including Niaosong Arts High School, where they participated in academic classes, dance workshops, and art activities. Reuniting with familiar faces and meeting new peers, students experienced the structure and spirit of Taiwanese school life—marked by discipline, respect for teachers, and dedication to both academics and the arts.

School lunches became a fun adventure of their own. Favorites like curry pork cutlets were balanced by nutritious options that gave students a true taste of everyday life in Taiwanese schools.

Night Markets, Street Food, and Everyday Adventures

From the famous night markets of Taipei to convenience store delicacies, students indulged in Taiwan’s vibrant food culture. Tanghulu (candied fruit), xiao long bao, gourmet ramen, and even the daring stinky tofu were all on the menu. These culinary experiences, coupled with interactions with friendly locals, helped students better appreciate Taiwan’s rich cultural diversity.

Scenic Wonders and Outdoor Exploration

The group explored a wide range of Taiwan’s scenic spots—from coastal towns and historic streets to the iconic Sun Moon Lake. Biking around Sun Moon Lake, rated one of the top 10 cycling routes in the world, was a favorite among students, offering not only breathtaking views but also a sense of personal achievement.

In Taipei’s Ximending district, students encountered a blend of youth culture and tradition, capturing the energy of Taiwan’s dynamic capital.

Building Global Citizens Through Travel

The Taiwan Trip 2025 was more than a school excursion—it was a life-changing experience. Students returned with unforgettable memories, cross-cultural friendships, and a renewed curiosity about the world. As one student shared, “It wasn’t just about sightseeing—it was about connection, discovery, and appreciation.”

At HSArts, we believe that education should extend beyond the classroom. International travel, cultural exchange, and arts education are key components of how we prepare students to be thoughtful, creative, and compassionate global citizens.
