Session 1 (June 14 - July 2):
Chinese Opera Dance - Dao Ma Dan (刀馬旦)
The intermediate Chinese Dance Intensive runs 3 hours a day for 3 weeks. Students will take classes in flexibility, dance fundamentals, tumbling, and repertoire. The feature repertoire number for this session is a Chinese opera theme dance Dao Ma Dan (刀馬旦), named after the Chinese opera role of the same name. In a typical opera where this role is cast, the Dao Ma Dan  is responsible for depicting heroic female characters. Note: This program requires significant dance experience. Performers will be featured in the Winter Recital. Students not currently enrolled with HSArts can inquire for an audition.

Session 2 (July  5 - July 23):
 Small group dances - TBA
The intermediate Chinese Dance Intensive runs 3 hours a day for 3 weeks. Students will take classes in flexibility, dance fundamentals, tumbling, and repertoire. Session 2 repertoire will focus on small group dances.

Class Descriptions
Fundamentals and Flexibility
This course includes rigorous classical training to improve dancers posture, flexibility, and musicality. Within this hour, students will practice the fundamentals of Classical Chinese Dance. Throughout the week, students will develop their skills gradually and gain a better understanding of their balance, weight transfer, and classical dance technique.

Bearing
Bearing, or “yun” (韻), can best be described as a particular inner spirit. Bearing is an essential part of classical Chinese dance, emphasizing internal spirit, breath, intent, personal aura, and deep emotional expression. In essence, the spirit leads form, so that form is imbued with spirit. This class will explore the depths of bearing and bring out the dancer’s inner beauty.

Classical Chinese and/or Ethnic/Folk Choreography
This repertoire class will focus on classical Chinese dance or Chinese ethnic and folk dance styles in its choreography. The choreography will draw inspiration from China’s 5,000 year history and from over 50 ethnic and folk groups in China, culminating in a dance that will celebrate artistry and the human spirit.
